Reading a Pareto Front

OptimizationPareto

The trade-off surface is the real deliverable of optimization — learn to read it.

Steps

Follow along

Each step is something you can do in the platform right now.

01

Step 1

Run an optimization with two conflicting objectives (e.g. conversion vs. cost).

02

Step 2

Open the results and find the Pareto front plot.

03

Step 3

Identify the extremes: the maximum-conversion candidate and the minimum-cost candidate.

04

Step 4

Pick the knee of the front — the point where you gain the most of one objective per unit of the other.

05

Step 5

Click candidates along the front and read their input parameters.

06

Step 6

Export the ranked candidate list and send it to TEA for pricing.

Notes

Pro tips

What experienced users wish they knew the first time.

Candidates on the front are all "optimal" — the ranking just orders them by your weights.
The knee is usually the most defensible choice for the lab: near-optimal on both objectives.
